Regicide, the new album by Randburg based group

NORTHWOLD - Did you know that stdogandtheday is a local band? Find out more about them here.

Northwold music band, stdogandtheday, released its first album, Regicide on 1 April, digitally and it sold online.

According to Burt Fraser, the band member, the concept for Regicide started in early 2012. “Julius Malema’s antics in the ANC Youth League, President Jacob Zuma’s never-ending public ridicule and the shadow of South Africa’s 2008 xenophobic attacks gave rise to the idea of making an outspoken record, prodding at South African issues, not another anti-American, anti-war-in-the-middle-east effort,” explained Fraser.

He added that they were influenced by their love of musicals, rock operas, concept albums and the sounds of famous international bands. “Meatloaf, Pink Floyd, Queen, Green Day, The Who and My Chemical Romance were huge influences on the style of the record, with lengthy songs, characters and underlying storylines and recurring themes, sonically, as well as lyrically,” said Fraser.

He further stated that the band is planning to spread the sound of this album to every province in South Africa, this year. The band comprises of four distinct personalities, Burt Fraser on rhythm/vocals, Nathan Holmes on drums, Joshua Rogers on bass and Andrew Sutherland on the lead. Fraser explained that last year, the band moved from Durban to Northwold in Randburg, for the sole purpose of pursuing music.

“We left our families, degrees and jobs behind in Durban because stdogandtheday is our life. Our band is an unapologetic, self-assured, dirty-swing-rock band with strong punk influences and ideas,” explained Fraser.

According to him, the band felt that Johannesburg held more opportunities and they quickly found a support base in West Rand.

Furthermore, Fraser said they use different influences of music which inject alternative sounds with energy and outspoken nature of punk rock. He concluded by saying that the band’s rehearsals are usually held at 6-String Studios in Ferndale, Randburg, off Malibongwe offramp.
