Is this business legal?

MALANSHOF – controversy around the Industrial business.

Confusion surrounds the legitimacy of a construction company which is operating from Hans Schoeman Street, Malanshof.

Residents have complained about noise, rats and property valuations, but even more serious are the allegations that it is operating outside the law.

Super Slabs is situated on land marked for residential area and according to one of its partners, Kayle Ramathan, the industrial business is operating legally.

Ramathan said a building inspector visited the premises and told him the business is legal as long as one person is living on the property, which is the case.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood confirmed that he asked the City Council to investigate the business, but he is still waiting for their response.

Wood also said illegal use of buildings was an ongoing problem in Randburg. Few residents have expressed their concerns about the legitimacy of Super Slabs.

Nicola Shiers, one of the residents, is adamant that the business is illegal. “It is a residential property,” she Shiers.

“I have documents from the council to prove they have no right to conduct any business there.”

Shiers said that the value of the houses in the area has decreased between R 3000 and R4 000 due to the business.

Another resident Val Naidoo said she wanted the issue solved before her property value drops too much and rats the size of cats “run around the area” because of this business. Tommy Diedericks who also reside in the area, said he is not happy about the decrease in his property’s value and also gets irritated by the noise made when materials are loaded.

Ela Wierzbicka said her safety was compromised by the business because people could easily climb from the business’s property over her neighbours’ walls into her property. The secretary at the company could not say if the business is legal or not. Ramathan said they would rent it out and if the tenants wanted to operate a business there he would let them. The City Council officials were called repeatedly but no response was received before going to print.
