Meeting Michaella

KYA SAND - Michaella Russell only 21 and is taking over the acting inudstry, one step at a time.

Kya Sand resident, Michaella Russell, famously known as Charlie Holmes in the soap Isidingo is more than the model and student she is known to be.

At the age of 21, Russell has successfully launched a career in acting. “I play a character that lives a different life to mine. Holmes is a rebel – a sexy, carefree young woman with an edge. There are only a few things I have in common with my character – her humanity, social skills and the fact that she is a student and an aspiring model.”

Russell described her personality as outgoing, down to earth, friendly and caring. “Often I learn a lot from my character who has overcome a lot of turmoil. I sympathise with her, and am inspired by her strength,” she said.

Acting for Russell can be rather challenging but she manages to tackle the craft and perfect it by focusing her energy on the job.

“Before getting into character I clear my mind. I make sure I also learn my script in advance, eat a balanced diet, and get enough sleep. You need to be disciplined. I do my best to make sure that I am well prepared for a shoot, and open myself to learning more.”

Although acting has taken up Russell’s life, she finds a way to study part time at the University of South Africa for a double major in psychology and economics.

“I am on set every day from the morning until the evening. I try catching up with tertiary work every chance I get. When I am not working I also try make time for friends, who thankfully understand my schedule.”

Rock climbing, dancing and going to the gym are a few of the activities that Russell likes to keep busy with. However, it is the charity work she does that makes her happy.

“I love to help others, that is why I am studying psychology, and the reason I went into acting. Through dance I hope to touch people’s lives and hope people are moved and inspired by my work, or the character I play.”

Russell believes that all that matters to make it into an industry such as acting is having the drive. “You need to be open to things, and push to do more. Work hard and stay focused,” she advised.
