A shade of joy

Painting has brought joy to Frances Greybe for 60 years.

Artist Frances Greybe (75) has been painting for 60 years.

She has also been teaching people how to paint for 45 years, but is not tired of it and wants to continue painting for as long as she is able to.

“Painting gives me great joy,” she said. “It is very calming and it is wonderful seeing different colours. I am fortunate to teach painting. I like to see my students’ satisfaction. That is the main thing, their happiness.”

Greybe has given lessons at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre for the past six years.

She prefers oil painting over watercolour painting because oil paintings are easier and can be painted over. Greybe started her career as a commercial artist, then she painted fine art for a while before working as the arts and crafts editor for the magazine, Your Family for 20 years.

Since then Greybe has been teaching painting and some of her students have received lessons from her for the past 30 years.

She still restores paintings and wants to continue painting for as long as her health will let her.

“I hope I can still paint in the future. It depends on my health. Some of my students could not even hold a paint brush when they got older.”
