Electricity upgrade in Kya Sand underway

Residents and business owners in Kya Sands have (electrical) light at the end of the tunnel.

Residents and business owners in Kya Sand have battled with the lack of electricity supply for years, but now a solution may have been found.

At a meeting, City Power spokesperson Louis Pieterse announced the city council had put aside R1.6 million towards upgrading power cables in the area.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said this was a huge victory for the residents. “Residents and business owners have had an electricity problem for so long and they came to all the meetings and listed their problems, and so many times meetings were postponed.”

Residents and business owners endured power failures for days on end, and eventually it affected their income. City Power representatives at the meeting said within three months the upgrade would be complete. Mafokwane said this was the first upgrade since the area was established.

“Hopefully the upgrade will be completed in time. This outcome really belongs to the residents. They have fought very hard.”
