Roads damaged by water

Storm-water in Ward 115 causes roads to crumble.

A storm-water drain collapse on the corner of Rose Street and Church Street in North Riding has left an enormous pothole.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana said, ”Many streets in Ward 115 have crumbled due to water damage. This pothole is one of many.”

The water from the collapsed drain flows down to resident Richard van Moerkerken’s house in Church Street and he has had to build a wall near his gate to prevent the water from flooding his house.

Moerkerken said it was after the second flood that he decided to have the wall built. ”Joburg Water is not doing anything to help,” he said. “I have taken matters into my own hands. The Johannesburg Roads Agency told me it was illegal to build the wall, however I will only be removing the wall once Joburg Water has fixed their pipes and the roads agency repair the road.”

Both the roads agency and Joburg Water were yet to respond at the time of going to press.
