Pikitup finally answers plea of residents

450 new bins to be dropped off early in January.

After 10 years of bickering Pikitup has finally decided to deliver 450 bins to residents in Riverglades Complex.

Refuse collection has been a sensitive subject for residents as they had to sort out their own rubbish and a private rubbish collector only came in once a week to collect the refuse.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana said the situation took a turn for the worse when Pikitup decided to collect the rubbish themselves, but they never pitched up. According to Santana bins were left inside the complex for weeks on end. “After a long ongoing battle Pikitup sent out a team to collect the bins and removed the rubbish,” he said.

“The other problem that arose was that the entity had to take up the rubbish to a compactor in Chrisoliet Street in Jukskei Park. This wasted too much time and rubbish used to stand outside the complex for days before the entity collected the bins.”

Santana and management at the complex tackled this issue when they constructed a paved and fenced off refuse area located outside the complex’s service gate. Pikitup spokesperson Desiree Ntshingila said the delay was due to the fact that the entity first had to meet with city council to discuss the bylaws associated with this issue because the complex was privately owned. “The bins have been ordered and will be dropped off in January when the staff returns from their holidays,” she said.
