Local director brings international play to SA

An international play is in South Africa thanks to a director from Randpark Ridge.

Randpark Ridge resident Benedek Forro (37) directed an international play that has been brought to South African theatres.

Forro, originally from Hungary is studying an MA in Directing at Wits. He first studied international relations at the University of Malta. “But I decided to go into drama,” he said. “I came to South Africa to check out the scene and then I met a girl, got married and had children.”

The play, The Interview is a comedy from India and is on at the Popart Theatre in Fox Street.

“We had a bit of a bumpy opening night with a tough crowd but we got there.” What intrigued Forro about the play was how local audiences could relate to the content of the play. The play is a corporate comedy where a man applies for a job and faces a gruelling job interview.

The cast consists of Bulelwa Ndaba, Jóvan Muthray, Danielle Oosthuizen and Tiaan Lubbe. Lubbe is also the stage manager.

“In today’s world, urban populations from across two continents face the same issues with unemployment, workplace politics and simply trying to find somebody to connect with,” said Forro referring to the gist of the play.
