Road closures ahead of Madiba memorial

JOBURG- Several roads surrounding the FNB Stadium will be closed ahead of the Nelson Mandela National Memorial Service on 10 December.

According to Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, roads in the vicinity of the stadium will be closed from Monday at midnight.

Nasrec Road, the Soweto Highway and Rand Show Road will be closed, Minnaar said.

In a statement, the City of Johannesburg said the N1 will be closed at the corner of the N1 and Rand Show Road.

Rand Show Road will then be closed at Aerodrome Road until the intersection of Nasrec Road.

Nasrec Road will be closed until the Soweto Highway.

The Soweto Highway will be closed from Diepkloof until Booysens.

Booysens Reserve Road will be closed from Crownwood Road to Nasrec Road.

The N17 and Colorado Drive, which continues from Nasrec, will also be closed at the circle.

Greenwood and Main Reefs Roads will also be closed.

According to Minnaar, private vehicles will not be allowed near the FNB Stadium and people are urged to use public transport.

Trains will operate from 5am from Vereeniging, Springs, Naledi, Leralla in Tembisa, Daveyton and Khwezi in Soweto.

Park and ride services will be available from Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, Westgate, Gold Reef City, Wits University, the Metro Centre in Braamfontein and Thuso House in Braamfontein and Kingsway Campus.

Minnaar added that there will also be Gautrain shuttle services from Rosebank and Sandton that will transport the public to Wanderers, where buses will transport them to the stadium.

All trains, buses and park and rides to the memorial service will be free.

The gates of the FNB Stadium will open at 6am and admission will be granted until the capacity of 94 000 is reached.

Thereafter, people will be transported to the overflow venues, which are Orlando, Dobsonville and Ellis Park stadiums.

Water will be provided but the public are advised to carry food and refreshments.

Roads will be re-opened after the memorial service.
