Old Parks fumbles league-winning chances

The coach of Old Parks indicated that before the next game, they will focus on finishing and composure in training

Old Parks U17’s chances of clinching the Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) title are hanging by the thread after a one-all draw at home against West Rand United.

The visitors did not show any respect or fear for the Old Parks. They took the game to them and were ready to leave everything on the field for three points.

The home-side forward, Siyabonga Mazibuko, broke the deadlock in the first half and gave his side a 1–0 lead. Old Parks almost wrapped the first half two goals up but Mazibuko’s free header inside the box went just over the crossbar.

West Rand was a different-looking side in the second half. They were stronger in the challenges and kept the ball longer in possession. They pushed the host back and started to create goal-scoring chances. The finishing in front of goals let the visitors down multiple times.

Both teams made changes with the host reinforcing their defence, hoping to protect their lead while the visitors throwing more attackers in hope of breaking Old Parks solid defence.

The home side was caught on a quick counter deep in the second half and Kgatelopile Mchunu found the equaliser (1–1).

Zunaid Williams explained that his boys played very well and they wanted to win the game.

“We have lost three games in a row and Old Parks is chasing the league and to stop them really is a confidence booster for my boys.”

Old Parks relied on Mazibuko’s speed and power. They still managed to get to the visitors’ final third but were unable to get another to kill the game.

Irie Jean, Old Parks coach, said a draw for them is a loss. “We wanted to win because we were in the race for the title but luck was not on our side.

“We tried our best, The game was very important for the whole team; everybody gave their best and we were unlucky.”
