Bordeaux water pipe leaks for 10 years

Residents bemoan the waste of so much water while South Africa is experiencing a water shortage.

Bordeaux residents say a water pipe on Garden Road has been leaking for 10 years.

This despite repeated phone calls and emails to Joburg Water to have the matter finally resolved.

The pipe has burst a few times over the years, including once in June last year that left the elderly residents of Garden Village without water for 48 hours while the pipe was repaired. Residents of the retirement village complained of not being able to wash themselves or flush their toilets, before the home provided them with water.

“The pipe is still leaking and the pavement is a disgrace,” said Colin Glajchen. “They need to fix the water leak and fix the hole. It’s dangerous and extremely unsightly.”

He said a car reversed into the hole once.

Phineas Glamanie said the loss of water over the years must have cost a fortune and was undoubtedly wasteful in a time South Africa is experiencing water shortages. He had tried to remove loose rocks from the site to clean it up a bit, but found them too heavy to lift.

Questions were sent to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala on July 5 pertaining to why the leak had not been repaired after such a long time, why residents had not been helped after reporting it time and again, and when they can expect to receive help from the entity.

No response was received by the time of going to print.

Stand-in Ward 102 councillor Julie Suddaby said she would escalate the matter.
