Velocity FA seniors drops important points

Growing Champions Football Club has won all of its games in the Rand Central League Football Association and is currently top of the table.

Velocity Football Academy seniors drops point at home in a 3–0 defeat to top-of-the-table side Growing Champions Football Club (GCFC).

The Fairland based GCFC demonstrated class and sheer dominance in the match hosted at Ferndale High School. The visitors swiftly took control of the game, trying to use the pace and strength of their forwards.

Velocity appeared to be settling into the game well, maintaining the ball and rotating it from all sides of the field, but they were unable to break GCFC’s rock-solid defence.

GCFC captain Wandile Billings was causing havoc in front, and his efforts paid off. He opened the scoring with a superb finish from the left side, making it 1–0 after 30 minutes.

Clive Letshoba, GCFC coach, said the victory was important considering that they got it from a chasing team that is also behind them in the log table.

“It was not an easy game, but we tried to work with what we have. The guys showed fighting spirit and that is what we stand for. Going forward, that’s our aim to keep on going strong and also keep on improving.

He added that they are learning game by game and they want to keep the same momentum and work even harder.

The home side showed glimpses of hope in the second half by creating chances. But Billings cancelled all their hopes of coming back in the game as he struck again to make it 2–0 for the visitors.

Brain Ntuli, the visitors’ midfielder, put the last nail in the coffin with a cracker from outside the box to make it 3–0.

Velocity coach Baaqir Bardien questioned the commitment from his players as his team struggled to control and contain the game.

“We worked with what we had – some players came, some confirmed that there were coming but did not. We were struggling with options, specifically in the midfield, so we ended up converting some of the players.”

He explained that the bad results put them a little on the back foot, but there are still more games to play.

“We need to fix the gaps in the midfield going to the next game but it starts with the players. We need to get the commitment from them first before we can get on the football side of it. As coach, this is what I need to deal with first.”
