Rand Park High School earns promotion to A-section of hockey tournament

The school also had a fantastic hockey season and 3 players were selected to compete in Southern Gauteng Hockey teams.

Coaching, hours of training and building a love for the game of hockey resulted in an outstanding season for Rand Park High School’s boys’ hockey teams. Both the junior boys and the first team celebrated their eligibility to compete in the A-section of the 2024 Boden and Aitken tournament.

Promotion to the A-section for Aitken was achieved after 15 years of competing in the B-section when the first team beat Christian Brothers’ College Boksburg in a convincing playoff win with a final score of 5–0. The U15 boys placed 10th in the Boden A-Section.

Matt Macnamara and Jaydyn Mitton celebrate after scoring a goal for Rand Park.

Traditionally, the school has been a contender for the Aitken (opens) and Boden (U15) tournaments, which is regarded as the largest schoolboy hockey tournament in South Africa.

The boys’ first team were unbeaten during their tour to North-West University in Potchefstroom in March where they played eight games. They went on to play 44 matches during the winter sports season and scored 108 goals. Three players have been selected to compete in the Southern Gauteng Hockey teams: Jaydyn Mitton (U18), Matthew Burgess (U16) and Mhleli Phasiwe (U14).

Grade 10 learner Michael du Toit does his school proud at one of the matches.

Coach and master-in-charge of boys’ hockey at the school Joshua Ashwood is very proud of how the school did. “Our players demonstrated accountability, self-discipline and great character during the season,” he said.

“They set out to achieve the teams’ goals and surpassed our expectations.”
