Contestants talk about the importance of having a junior station commander

Linden police organised a debate for students from several schools to choose junior commanders who will aid the police and community while also helping to develop a relationship between police and youth.

Linden Police Station launched a programme to implement the junior station commander as part of the Youth Month celebrations, as well as build a CPF youth desk. The speech competition was attended by students from numerous local schools including King David, King’s School Robin Hills, Hoërskool Linden, Delta Park, and Concord College. A similar topic was assigned to each learner, with five minutes to present and three minutes to be interviewed by the Linden Police Station commander and detectives on the panel.

Randburg Sun asked the contestants why they feel it is important to have a junior station commander in the police station working closely with the police.

This is what they had to say…….

Botlhale Maepa:
Botlhale Maepa:
It is important because the youth is more likely to look up to someone of their age who shows a lot of knowledge and someone who looks forward to assisting them and the community to create a safe environment for everyone. It will encourage young people to do better.
Adelaide de Lange:
Adelaide de Lange:
I think it’s important to have a junior station commander because you can get a perspective from the youth who are experiencing these problems. Adults don’t always understand what is going on, especially in this new age of technology, so getting a perspective from someone who is going through it is a good thing.

I feel it is important because they are going to assist the police with issues that are affecting young people. They will bring new energy and assist young people with whatever they are going through. They will relate and be more understanding than the police.
Jonathan van der Merwe:
Jonathan van der Merwe:
It is important to have a junior because police do a lot of work with the schools so having a junior will give them perspective of what is going on in the schools and it will be easy to work with the students because they will be able to relate.
