Pirates Cricket Club travelled to the Randburg Sports Complex on a hot and sunny March 11. The cloudless skies and lack of wind made conditions perfect for batting and when Pirates won the toss, that is what they elected to do.

But while they had a strong start and held onto their wickets, scoring was slow. Pirates mustered 124/6 in their 35 overs.

Randburg’s pick of the bowlers was Hamish Scott, who took 3/15 in his seven overs, and Callum de Bruyn, who took 3/23 in his seven.

When their turn came, Randburg’s batters played more positively and whether as a result of their free play or not, saw their partnerships last longer.

They reached 127/3 in 28 overs with seven overs to spare. Erin Parenzee scored 68 not out and Jack Cauldwell contributed 44.

“It was a good match to watch,” said Randburg coach Allister Zowe. “I think the batting showed a lot of maturity, with Erin Parenzee guiding his younger partner to almost a century partnership in the opening stand. It was a pity Jack fell six runs short of his 50, but they batted well, with calculated risks and good running between the wickets.”

The coach said his team had been ‘struggling a bit’ and was sitting in the drop zone of the log.

With four weeks of matches left in the season, Zowe hopes this win will boost their confidence though.
