Diggers Junior Rugby Club hosts trials, sees over 200 children attend

The club won seven medals at last year's inter-provincial tournament and so attracted a great number of new faces to the trials.

You wouldn’t think they were rusty when they smashed into the tackle bags at full force, or expertly placed high kicks all around the field.

But some months before the season’s official start, Diggers Junior Rugby Club hosted its trials for players U6 to U13 level and saw more than 200 youngsters turn up eager to impress.

“The feedback we received from parents and coaches was that it was a phenomenal day,” said the club’s vice-chairperson Keith Baillie.

“There was lots of fun and lots of new players. Children from last year were there too.”

He said 230 players have registered and he expected more to do so in the coming weeks.

Pre-season training will be held until the end of May, with practices being more frequent closer to the time, after which the official season will begin with competitive matches.

“Last year we had great success at the IPT [inter-provincial tournament] and won five gold and two silver medals. Success attracts talent and we hope to build on this in the upcoming season.”

The junior rugby club has 11 age groups, as well as a budding girls’ section. The girls play with the boys currently but the coaches aim to start some girls-only teams in the coming seasons.

“The girls are good. They give the boys a proper go and we look forward to building on that talent and passion for the game.”

The club will have an open day on March 18, with Lions flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse and some of their coaches overseeing training alongside coaches from Diggers, Craven Week, Golden Lions Rugby Union and ShadowBall.

There will be food and drinks on sale and Baillie said anyone interested in finding out more about the club is welcome to visit or send them an email.
