Robin Hills and Robindale experience at least 6 water leaks in successive days
Massive water leaks persist in the Robins due to old infrastructure.
Residents in the ‘Robins’ had a very messy few weeks when several water meters, pipes and even a fire hydrant burst.
Robins Residents and Ratepayers Association (RRRA) chairperson, Irvin Sammons explained that it was nothing short of a water crisis.
The bursts included four massive leaks on Blesbok and Rooibok roads, Robin Hills, and a broken water meter in Esmaralda Crescent, Robindale.
Water even poured from a fire hydrant on Rietbok Avenue, Robin Hills, at one point.
Although these were each attended to fairly quickly by Joburg Water, they left residents without running water for extended periods because of the regularity of the bursts.
“Joburg Water has always come to the party, they have sent contractors whenever there was a leak,” Sammons said.
“I guess with the water crisis we are in, they have to jump to action whenever there is a leak.”
When contacted by Randburg Sun, Joburg Water’s acting manager of communications, Puleng Mopeli followed up on every reported burst.
She said there had been many bursts in recent months, especially as old asbestos cement pipes needed replacing.
But they, and every reinstatement required as a result of broken roads and pavements, would be attended to.
“We replace about 100km per annum and much as the City’s network is over 1 200km,” she said.
“It’s work in progress.”
Ward councillor Nicole van Dyk could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print.
