Radley High School campaigns against gender-based violence

In an attempt to raise awareness around the severity of the subject.

The Grade 11 learners of Radley Private School ran a campaign that focused on a big societal issue that South Africans were faced with, Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The Ferndale-based school’s learners’ target was to raise awareness at the school and in the Randburg community around the severity of the subject and the hazard it posed to the vulnerable members of society.

Gender-based Violence was part of the Life Orientation curriculum and this year, the learners together with their teacher Mr Parsons decided that it was an issue that they wanted to draw more attention to.

Radley High School principal Yulandi Noëth said, “I am very proud of the maturity and creativity the Grade 11s applied to this campaign. Gender-based violence is unfortunately a real issue in South Africa. As part of their campaign, the class highlighted that any form of violence towards others is not acceptable and that it is not only men who commit acts of violence.”

Noëth said boys and men could also be victims of violence.

“I think it is really important for young people to engage with difficult subject matters and real-world issues. Teenagers must have opportunities to speak up.”

Some of the Grade 11 learners voiced why they thought this campaign was vital.

Philile Nxumalo said, “The purpose of the campaign is for us to acknowledge that gender-based violence is noticed by the youth and we aren’t allowing our age to stop us from fighting it.”

Rehema Kabale said, “Our campaign had an objective to bring awareness within our school about gender-based violence. Through this experience, we were able to highlight the importance of how our communities need to be aware of our countries and the world’s social issues.”

Rushaylin Moodley said, “Everyone knows about gender-based violence. However, not many people understand its effects on the victim or how to seek help from others. That, to my group, was the main goal of this campaign.”
