Radley Private School art curators make R3500 profit

As the guests feast their eyes on the art displayed, Tourism learners treat guests to some eatables.

The visual arts department of Radley Private School held its annual on-site Art Exhibition on the evening of September 16.

This exhibition featured artwork by visual arts learners in grades 10 to 12 as well as artwork done by the Grade 8 and 9 creative arts learners.

To add to the experience for attendees, the Grade 10 tourism learners provided an assortment of finger foods and their signature drink, ‘the Ragito’ which was served as the guests arrived

Grade 12 learner Anitha Buhlungu said her art portfolio was based on social and political issues and detailed the themes behind her different art pieces.
Her artwork illustrated gender-based violence, the fires in Australia when the koalas were in danger, and others illustrated some of her positive mindsets.

She said, “I feel like because I’ve been through certain experiences, it’s easier for me to express my feelings through drawing them out.”

Grade 12 learner Auren de Jager detailed his artwork titled ‘Life in a nutshell’ which depicted evolution, the pyramids and the creation of infrastructure and architecture in the world.
Grade 12 learner Njabulo Mlambo said his artwork was based on the viewer’s interpretation of it and fellow learner Chris Kanga shared the message behind his gender-based violence artwork.

“I was trying to give out the message that we always don’t see it [gender-based violence] but we always hear about it. Most of my art depicts how most women feel trapped,” said Chris.
After the exhibition, an auction was held.

“Two artworks that sold for the highest price were created by Auren de Jager [R400] and Anitha Buhulungu [R400],” said principal Yulandi Noëth.
In total, the visual arts entrepreneurs made approximately R3 500 in profits for themselves for the evening.”
