What does Heritage Day mean to you?

South Africa’s younger generation tells us what Heritage Day means for them.

Heritage Day which is celebrated on September 24 honours South Africa’s cultural wealth. This day acknowledges the cultural heritage of South Africa’s many cultures that make up our population.

As we celebrate this day, we have to take note of South Africa’s younger generation and ensure that as they celebrate this day with us, they understand the country’s historic moments. The country’s youth play an important role in shaping our country’s future.

The Randburg Sun spoke to the grade 6 learners at Boskop Primary School to find out what Heritage Day means to them, here’s what they said…

PARIS BRAMDAV: Heritage Day is a day when people celebrate their culture. Heritage Day is an important day as it shows our roots and different cultures.
NHLAKANIPHO NAKUMBA: Heritage Day means that we honour our culture on a specific day or any time we have to celebrate. Heritage Day honours our ancestors and we eat traditional food.
ANDILE RAMPERSAD: Heritage Day is a day we all celebrate our heritage and show pride in our race and religion as it is passed down from the elderly and we should all be kind to everyone.
AMANI MATJILA: I think of Heritage Day as a day where everyone, no matter their race, can embrace the tradition they like or love.
MAKHADZI MALIGANA: To me, Heritage Day is a day where we can celebrate our roots and the unity of culture. Heritage Day is very special because people get the chance to express their spiritual impression of culture. Heritage Day is supposed to be respected because we all have different beliefs and roots.
