Local lifeguard asks people to be more considerate

People act indecently in public places. They should know better, says local lifeguard.

Alister Lee writes:

I am a lifeguard and so safety and consideration for others are top priorities for me.

I wish people thought more about each other and decency, especially in public places.

I enjoy being allowed to serve the community and provide a service but people need to understand that they have a responsibility to themselves and each other.

I have been a lifeguard for eight years at public pools across Joburg and currently work at Robin Hills Swimming Pool.

Before I have been at Newclare, Roosevelt Park, Linden and other pools.

I have had to save a few people. Normally they are the small children playing in the big pool but sometimes some adults do not know how to swim, or who get caught in the currents of the pool.

This is part of the job.

Unfortunately, some people play roughly in the pool and we have to stop that.

Other people do not wear costumes but think it is alright to wear boxer shorts and other underwear in a public place. We get a lot of that.

There are also loud parties and people bring alcohol. They throw the bottles on the ground and make the park area look untidy.

Children are always stealing the toilet paper in the bathrooms and so we have had to keep it away in the lifeguard office.

Even with crime, a few years back I witnessed someone shot, a car being stolen out of a yard and some house burglaries as well.

It frustrates me that people do not think about others and it annoys me that they know what is wrong but do it anyway.

We are all part of a community and need to not only think of ourselves.
