Linden lawn bowls champion has tournament named after her

Local bowls club hosts tournament as fundraiser for local legend and national champion's overseas trip.

Esmé Haley is one of the most famous and successful bowlers in Joburg.

So it was little surprise when her home club decided to hold a tournament in the name of the national women’s singles champion and multiple Commonwealth Games medallist.

Linden Bowling Club will hold the Esmé Haley Day – a trips format tournament – on September 24.

This is to honour the legend as well as help raise funds for her trip to New Zealand in November for the World Bowls Championships, something she won 10 years ago.

“It is very nice of them to host the tournament for me,” Haley told Caxton Local Media.

“I have been to the world champs three times and this will be my fourth. I want to go 10 days before to have some practice and get used to the conditions there in New Zealand. The best from each country will be there so it will be a great experience.”

Linden Bowling Club secretary Lynne van Zyl explained that because the club was busy with spring treatment on its lawns, it could only host 14 mixed trips teams at the Esmé Haley Day.

“It’s going to be a day of great bowls, delicious food and lots of prizes, proudly sponsored by Seeff,” she said.

“Come and join us to witness this wonder-woman of bowls in action… We’ll have the braais going, the bar will be open and the music going.”

Van Zyl concluded that Haley had done so much for her club, district and country. Even working full-time, she makes time to coach and encourage new bowlers.
