A stretch of Republic Road in Darrenwood to receive new electricity cables

Temporary measures to supply electricity will replaced with a permanent one (new cables) in Darrenwood.

New cables will be laid in Darrenwood after incidents of cable theft saw a temporary solution put in place to supply power to the area affected.

The cables on Republic Road were stolen during numerous incidents of vandalism at the two substations which are about 500m apart, also on the road, in July.

City Power made a plan to supply the homes affected by the cable theft, with power, until the substations would be better secured or the cables replaced.

“Following a series of vandalism and theft of the infrastructure incidents, we have taken a decision to remove the transformer substation and replace it with a high-performance mini-substation,” said spokesperson Isaac Mangena at the time.

“We have also spoken to the owner of the nearby complex to allow us to house the mini-substation in their property at no charge to City Power and they have agreed, and we are thankful for their assistance. We believe this should be able to minimise vandalism and ensure the security of supply to our customers in the area.”

Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk confirmed that on September 11, new cables will be installed.
