Meet the multitalented young female musical prodigy

Multitalented young creative performer vocalises her journey with her musical gift

If the term ‘jack of all trades, but master of all’ was a person, it would probably be the versatile and oh-so-talented Sego Molefe aka Psycho Sax.

Molefe was the host of the lively All-Female Musician event which saw young skilled female musicians show off their rare musical talents at Young Rebel Recording Studio in Ferndale.

Following her phenomenal saxophone performance at this event, Randburg Sun spoke to Molefe to find out more about her amazing talent.

Psycho sax is well known for playing the saxophone. She is currently completing her degree in music at the University of Witwatersrand. She has been training in classical music from the age of six then branched off into other genres at the age of 17.

Molefe is a producer and composer who arranges and performs music through her vocals, saxophone, djembe drums, descant recorder, marimba and piano. Her skills don’t end here, she is a bartender, model, actress and music tutor.

Her musical drive is derived from the lack of confidence in female artists. “I believe that I can try my best to give female creatives, especially instrumentalists, a platform to showcase their passion without fear.”

Molefe shared her challenges in the industry. “Being automatically underestimated because I am a female and discrimination created by the way that I dress and some of my music…”

She combatted these challenges by not caring about society’s stereotypes and keeps sharing her passion for playing music.

“I have support from the community in my area, especially other local artists. Friends and family always come through when they can. The little support that I have received has helped me share even more of my music.”

Her musical journey as Psycho Sax has awarded multiple awards from runner-up in the Victoria K Bennet Music Competition in 2018 and 2021, to the Shein Weltman Award for top instrumentalist/vocalist student in 2020 and 2021 at Wits University.

“I was a selected winner for the Trace Gender Equality Track competition 2021/2022 as an instrumentalist. I have competed in competitions playing the marimba for the Arnold Schwarzenegger Talent Festival 2019 … in modelling, I was a finalist in the Miss Galaxy South Africa 2021/22 pageant.”

Molefe dreams of owning an institution for disadvantaged females who have a passion for the arts.

She closed off with a quote she keeps close to her heart: ‘Practice like you’ve never won but play like you’ve never lost’, keeping in mind that with effort, patience and practice, anything is possible.
