Come play bowls at Old Parks in Bordeaux

The club will accommodate all new players and provide bowls while they try out the sport.

Lawn bowls is no longer perceived as a sport just for the older generation.

So said chairperson of Old Parktonian Bowls Club Bill Bowen.

“Bowls was traditionally regarded as ‘old men’s marbles’,” he said.

“This is no longer the case and for those who did not watch the recent Commonwealth Games held in the UK, the ladies [bronze] medal was won by a 27-year-old from New Zealand [Tayla Bruce], who also skipped the winning ladies fours team and she was the oldest in their squad of players.”

The women’s singles gold medal went to 25-year-old Australian Ellen Ryan.

Bowen said the sport was social and played by all ages and both sexes.

“Old Parktonian Sports Club is happy to accommodate any newbies who wish to learn to play the game, as well as welcome seasoned players to their ranks. Qualified coaching is available and bowls will be provided during coaching sessions and until the bug bites when players can purchase their own preferred sets.”

Set-up costs can be quite expensive, he said, but secondhand sets of bowls are usually inexpensive.

“Basically, all you need to start to learn to play bowls is a pair of flat-soled shoes.”
