Protest to be staged outside Randburg Magistrate’s Court

At a previous appearance a small crowd, some of whom were rape survivors, quietly protested, held up signs and banners, handed out ribbons and spoke to passersby at the court.

The case involving a man accused of raping his daughter, who was 16 at the time, will go to trial in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on September 6 and 7.

Members of Free World Initiative and the public will once again demonstrate at the court to show support for the 17-year-old girl and picket for justice for rape victims.

The man is a National First Division (GladAfrica Championship) soccer coach who used to coach in the PSL. He allegedly raped his daughter in her bedroom in November 2020, as part of his birthday present to himself.

At his appearance on December 3 last year, a small crowd, some of whom were rape survivors, quietly protested, held up banners, handed out ribbons and spoke to passersby at the court.

The man appeared in court, avoiding the crowd on his way in and out, and was told his bail was extended and the matter postponed.

This is despite the girl’s mother and members of the organisation alleging he had violated his bail orders by contacting the girl, his mother, and her friends.
He also allegedly sent them money.

“The investigating officer did not pitch and put forward the documents to show he had broken his bail conditions,” said Free World Initiative founder and CEO Lebogang Motau.

“There is even a case of intimidation against this man in KwaZulu-Natal where he pulled a gun on this same daughter. One in three women are raped in this country and the system works against the victim. They have to prove they are innocent and the other person is guilty. Even this girl’s mom has had to collect the evidence because the police are not helping at all.”

Speaking to the Randburg Sun, the girl’s mother said the man was charged with rape but they are also trying to lay charges of incest.

ActionSA PR councillor Funzi Ngobeni also came to show his support for the victim.

He likened gender-based violence to a widespread pandemic in this country and also blamed the justice system for being ineffective in dealing with the problem.
