Bordeaux fighters win gold in jiu-jitsu

The hard work siblings put in in training, bears fruit at national jiu-jitsu event.

Bordeaux’s wrestling and jiu-jitsu siblings have once again done proud by winning gold medals in a national event.

Dominick and Skyla Aoun lit up Wits University with their incredible skills in the Jiu-Jitsu ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) Challenge on August 14.

“After lockdown, it was our first international tournament for this year for Dominick and Skyla,” said their father and assistant coach Fadi.

“We started training and meal preparing as healthy eating is the name of the game. We trained twice a day in the morning before school and after school, we trained at Gracie Barra Melrose under Professor Yron Kairon dos Santos.”

He said on the day of the tournament, there were not enough youngsters in Dominick’s weight division so he went up a weight class (to boys 11–14 years, -50kg) to challenge himself.

But in the first match, the opponent grabbed Dominick from behind and he almost lost to a deep rear naked choke. However, he recovered by pulling off a ‘berimbolo’ rear naked choke to beat his opponent and amaze the crowd.

In his second fight, Dominick had to beat a larger opponent and he used a guillotine choke to do so.

Skyla suffered a knee injury three days before the tournament so she didn’t train her upper body until the event.

“We were all worried about how she was going to do. Her first fight was with her friend [Layla Ramos] from another gym. I think it’s… difficult to fight [a] friend,” Fadi said.

But Skyla separated her jiu-jitsu from her social life and went on to beat Layla 4–2 on points.

Like her brother, Skyla also went on to win her second fight and a gold medal.

Dominick is now preparing for the Abu Dhabi Combat Club World Championship in November.
