A local theatre actor gives back to the community

A professional actor and a drama coach empower the techniques of drama in Seren House Cottage learners.

Matthew Ribnick juggles his career as a professional actor, writer and drama coach while teaching drama at Seren House Cottage School.

He is an award-winning stage performer specialising in live theatre and holds a degree in drama from Wits. He has played in The chilli boy, Monkey nuts, and many more dramas.

According to Ribnick, the disruption of Covid-19 in theatres led to his employment as a drama coach and teaches learners at high schools and elementary schools.

“During Covid-19, all the theatres were shut down and the principal of Seren House Cottage school, who has known my work for years and has come to watch me at the theatre and all over the country, asked me to teach drama in her school since theatres were closed and I jumped at the opportunity and thought it was a nice thing to do.
“The kids are enjoying the drama and so am I.”
He added that he found a balance between his professional life as an actor and drama coach.
“I do my professional work in my private space and can still come and teach drama during the day.”

Ribnick said being involved in acting took courage.

“The interesting thing about being an actor is that you have to get on stage and be ready to mess up because that is the only way to get better and be courageous to take a step.

“For those who are interested in the drama they should get their work out there by sharing their videos on social media and using acting agencies.”
