Popular breakfast show donates 6 700 litres of soup for Mandela Day

Ontbytsake cast members participate in the Chefs with Compassion soup challenge.

Well-known breakfast show Ontbytsake airs on kykNET channel 144 on MultiChoice DStv based in Ferndale.
The show is centred on giving small and medium-sized businesses national exposure and has become a key part of many South Africans’ weekend morning routine.

The show is made up of a dynamic crew who always try to make a difference wherever they can. Economist Dawie Roodt, musician Leon Gropp, actress Eloise Cupido, chef Corli Botha, and their production crew are always ready for an impactful challenge.

As a result, when kitchen appliance company AEG challenged them to participate in Chefs with Compassion’s annual soup challenge on July 18, they did not hesitate to roll up their sleeves and get involved.

“Chefs with Compassion is the biggest annual collaboration of cooks, communities and corporates, cooking for a cause. The aim of this initiative is to provide 67 000 litres of soup to hungry South Africans across the country on Mandela Day,” said Alani Coetsee, publicist for Starbust Promotions.

The crew had offered to donate 10% (6 700 litres) of the overall soup quota in partnership with The B-Loved Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by The B4i Project – the umbrella company that owns Ontbytsake – to help disadvantaged communities.

Coetsee said a high-quality dry soup mixture that could effortlessly be converted into a nutritious and delicious soup, would be used for that purpose. During Botha’s segment on the show on July 16, she demonstrated what the mixture looked like and the simplicity of its preparation.

In respect of Mandela Day, the 67 000-litre soup challenge arose in 2020 and had fed about 600 000 hungry people since.

In addition to the soup preparation, people could contribute by making a donation to The B-Loved Foundation, which would be distributing soup to a variety of charity organisations in Gauteng.

“It is important for our country to uplift women where possible. The B-Loved Foundation is dedicated to providing food to the less fortunate on Mandela Day, especially to resilient women and children,” said Octavia Ephraim, director of The B-Loved Foundation.

Ontbytsake and The B-Loved Foundation challenged other television programmes to participate and do their bit to feed the hungry this season.

“67 000 litres of soup will not solve our country’s problems, but strong leadership will. Onbytsake supports the reconciliation leadership that Nelson Mandela put forward and, with that in mind, wants to help make a difference on Mandela Day,” concluded Louis Mclaren, executive producer of Onbytsake and group CEO of The B4i Project.
