Randburg Harriers celebrates 40th with glühwein and cupcakes

The celebration followed the weekly time trial and also featured karaoke and a firepit.

Randburg Harriers Running Club held a low-key celebration of its 40th birthday ahead of a more formal event in September.

Public relations officer Buwi Moeketsi explained that after the time trial on July 14, members met to enjoy glühwein and cupcakes as they reminisced on the club’s long history and celebrate the birthday that was two days before.

There was also karaoke and a firepit.

“Not many clubs in the country can actually claim that [they have been around for 40 years],” said chairperson of the club Jacob Shayi on the night.

“That means on the 12th of July 1982, when I was in Grade 7, this club was formed.”

He added a more formal celebration of the club’s 40th will come in September, when other initiatives the club is putting together, will come to fruition.

Founder and inaugural chairperson at the club Dave Jack said the following in a Facebook post two days before, “[Forty] years ago today, Randburg Harriers was born as an idea I had that it should be a family-based running club, catering mainly for the ‘ordinary’ runner, and I’m delighted to say that, 40 years later, this is still the club’s philosophy. Happy 40th birthday Randburg Harriers – you’re great.”
