Fine artist is doing just fine

TUT alumnus breaks the cycle of youth unemployment in the Honeydew community through fine art.

Nkululeko Nkosi (28), a local fine artist in Honeydew is breaking the graduate unemployment cycle through art.
He has a fine art national diploma from Tshwane University of Technology and continues to study.

The young entrepreneur owns his own company, Spruce arts and tattoos, which produces and designs T-shirts using fine art skills and is also a tattoo studio.
“I have always loved drawing ever since I was young and pursuing it now feels like I am not far from where I want to see myself in the next coming years,” said Nkosi.
“I tried pursuing a different course in the faculty of management at Tshwane University of Technology although that did not make the cut in my heart, as I did not enjoy it and felt like I was drifting away from my passion.

“I like the fact that this job is challenging as it moulds me in all aspects of life, and makes me realise other opportunities besides just drawing and selling designed T-shirts.”

He said being a fine artist had taught him to persevere and be innovative.

“Being able to think outside the box and coming up with exciting new ideas gets me to look forward to the day even though at times it’s hard getting customers, and I also take this job as a way of escaping youth unemployment and hope my move inspires others to bring about change in their lives as well in their communities.”

The artist wishes to renovate his rented studio. “My wish is to be assisted with building materials so that I can use them to renovate my studio and make it a place where one would want to get their designed T-shirt.”

He said each T-shirt cost R400 and it was R600 for a sweater.

“For those who are interested in buying my designed T-shirts, they can find them in Honeydew next to a sports ground or taxi rank.”
