Police confiscate replica firearm altered to fire like a real gun

The discovery was made with the confiscation of several other unlicensed firearms.

Police made a rare discovery when they found a replica gun that had been fitted with new parts so it could be fired with real bullets like a normal gun.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said they uncovered the rare piece among many other firearms in Cosmo City.

“[Two] officers were on duty patrolling the area when they saw three suspicious men in a vehicle on South Africa Drive,” Muthan said.

“The officers stopped the vehicle and found that the men were known by the police. They were searched and found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”

When these were brought back to the station and processed, the replica was discovered.

The men were arrested and charged, and will appear in court soon, Muthan added.

Cosmo City currently has a small satellite police station linked to Honeydew Police Station, but community members have in the past complained it is insufficient to meet the need in the area.

“Police members are working around the clock to fight crime in Cosmo City. Residents must understand that to give the area its own fully-fledged police station will require a lot and it cannot be done overnight.”

The provincial police need to approve this, and there are other areas also in need of their own stations, Muthan concluded.
