Try your hand at the Randburg Art Society

Artists are grateful to Delta Café for opening its doors when Blairgowrie Recreation Centre closed its.

If you’re looking to get into art then look no further than a local group that is very welcoming of new members.

The Randburg Art Society’s members focus on paintings and sketches – so, art on paper.

The group is mostly comprised of retirees but they welcome people of all ages and backgrounds.

Several are accomplished artists who sell their works and hold exhibitions.

“We had 26 people before Covid but some left and some even passed away,” said the society’s chairperson, Teresa New.

“We always welcome new faces and hope to grow our group again.”

Started in 1988, the society spent more than 30 years at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre before the centre’s closure for maintenance since last year forced them to move to Delta Café & Don Quixote, where they meet every Monday morning.

“We are grateful to Dan Basch from the café who came to our rescue. It has been difficult to keep the society alive during the Covid period. The centre has been out of commission for over a year being renovated. Everyone is so keen to go back.”

The group is particularly proud of Arthur Atkins who, at 92, still meets weekly to paint landscapes with acrylics and pastels.

He has been a member of the group for about 30 years.
