Wrestling siblings win gold medals in recent tournaments

Bordeaux youngsters pick up four gold medals in one weekend.

Two local wrestlers shone in the recent Frank Joubert Open and Submission Kids tournaments.

Siblings Dominick and Skyla Aoun from Bordeaux, secured gold in their divisions at both events in one weekend.

The youngsters have been training hard in wrestling and jiu-jitsu of late.

At the Submission Kids event, the action was particularly exciting and Skyla competed in three full grappling matches.

These included going against some of the best U18 female 45kg competitors in the country.

“Her first two fights clearly went to plan both resulting in wins but the strategies were clearly both double-leg take downs, resulting in the pass and into the mounted position,” said father and assistant coach Fadi.

“On to the final she went and dominated the match to take the gold against a worthy opponent via points gain.”

Dominick’s U18 45kg fights similarly saw intense and technical fights.

“The [final] fight started off to an explosive high dive with a throw to the side taking his opponent to the ground. Literally running circles around him to take the back from north south, locking in a body triangle and finishing him off with the rear naked choke. [It was] an amazing performance.”

The proud father thanked coach Dean van Zyl of Ruiter Wrestling Club and Professor Storm Conrad at Gracie Barra Illovo, for their hard work in training his children.
