Diepsloot murder accused in court

The accused were remanded in custody for them to require legal representation.

A group of seven men appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, four counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery with aggravating circumstances and extortion.

“The charges relate to the death of Elvis Nyathi, who was beaten and burnt to death in Diepsloot on April 7,” explained National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

“The rest of the charges stem from an alleged act of vigilantism, wherein Zimbabwean nationals were allegedly attacked by a group of Diepsloot residents, that accused them of committing crimes in the area. The group is alleged to have robbed some of the victims of their belongings and demanded money in exchange for the release of those in captivity.”

All accused were remanded in custody until April 22, for them to acquire legal representation.
