Suspect arrested for staging his own hijacking

Police claim the man was never hijacked on Malibongwe Drive, made the story up.

A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in Randburg Magistrate’s Court to face charges of defeating the ends of justice and theft, after allegedly staging his own hijacking.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said it is alleged that at 07:00 on April 14, the complainant, who is now a suspect, was driving on the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Hammer Avenue, Strijdom Park, when he was stopped by a white Golf 7 with blue lights.

“He further alleged that he was pulled out of the truck, a firearm pointed at him, assaulted and made sit inside the car [that] drove off with him until he was dropped off in Alexandra,” Maja said.

“He was assisted and opened the docket of hijacking at Alexandra Police Station.”

But preliminary investigations revealed the man was apparently never hijacked.

“He was traced and arrested for defeating the ends of justice and theft from the said vehicle.”

Station Commander of Randburg Police Station Brigadier Michelle Jones applauded the police members for their investigation in the matter and called upon the community not to report false cases as that wastes the resources of the police.
