Police warn residents to be vigilant when purchasing expensive items online

Police advised residents to refrain from paying money when purchasing large items like vehicles before they meet with the seller.

Linden police are warning residents to be more vigilant, especially when buying goods online.

This is after a woman was allegedly scammed online on March 12. Linden Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Takalani Sibiya said the victim had been surfing the internet trying to purchase a vehicle.

“She found a number [of a seller] on the website. He [ alleged seller] responded to the request and they started to communicate on WhatsApp about a car.”
The alleged seller then promised the woman that he could arrange for her to buy a vehicle and that she must pay a first instalment of
R3 000 before she could get the car.

“She deposited the money. After deposing the money she tried to call the guy and she could not get hold of him.”
According to the police, the alleged seller no longer responded to the victim’s WhatsApp messages.
“The community is advised not to pay any money when purchasing large or big items like vehicles before they meet with the seller and see what they are purchasing.”
