Car-jammer suspect arrested after a high-speed chase

OLIVEDALE – Collaboration between police and the private security companies lead to the arrest of the alleged car-jamming suspect.

A 52-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after he was subsequently shot during a high-speed chase with a security guard on February 2 around Olivedale after a cellphone was allegedly stolen from a vehicle.

According to the Douglasdale Police Station spokesperson Captain Mpho Tshetlhane, it is alleged that a 32-year-old man had parked his Land Rover at the petrol station to buy from the shop.
“When he came out of the shop he was informed that the suspect, who was driving a white Volvo, was inside his vehicle,” said Tshetlhane.

The suspect then sped off from the scene. The security guard who was around the petrol station gave chase and ordered the suspect to stop. He ignored the instruction and the security guard fired a shot at the suspect injuring him in his upper body. When the suspect realised that he was cornered, he then threw away the victim’s cellphone through the window.
The police were alerted about the incident. The victim’s cellphone was recovered. A car-jamming device was also found in the suspect’s possession.

Tshetlhane said police preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was using a false vehicle registration number. “He is also linked to several other cases of theft out of motor vehicle at different police stations around Gauteng province. The suspect was arrested for theft out of motor vehicle, possession of car-breaking implements and possession of the suspected stolen property. Police investigations are continuing.”

Douglasdale Station Commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum added, “We applaud the collaboration between the police and the private security companies in their mission to ensure that the community of Douglasdale is and feel safe.”
