‘Rape corner’ cut

NORTHGATE – City Parks cuts grass on 'rape corner' as matter needed urgent attention.


Overgrown grass and bushes at the infamous ‘rape corner’ have finally been cut, but not all of it has, and a resident has warned violent crimes may still occur in the area.

This after Randburg Sun reported on the matter which goes back to 2016, and involves an increase in unreported violent crimes, including alleged rape, that residents and security companies in the area have tried to prevent themselves.

This on the corner of Malibongwe Drive and Olievenhout Avenue as well as the Olievenhout Avenue and Drysdale Road intersection.

The problem is criminals allegedly hide in the bushes before robbing or raping passersby and fleeing in getaway vehicles.

Residents have said that they hear cries for help and respond with garden tools to chase the accouters away.

Though it is not their jurisdiction, but the provincial department’s, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo cut grass on Malibongwe Drive leading to Olivenhout Avenue to address the urgent matter.

DA councillor, Ralf Bittkau, who will be sworn in as Ward 101 councillor imminently, said he was very glad of this as ‘getting province to do anything is virtually impossible, he claimed

One resident, who wished to not be named because the criminals already know her, however, complained that larger bushes and trees were left unattended on the corner and this could still cause a problem.

Honeydew Police Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan urged victims to open cases so they can assign resources to deal with the crime.

“There are certain officers dealing with gender-based violence and we can assign them to the case,” he said.
