Budding tennis aces have a smashing time

DARRENWOOD – Youngsters serve up a storm at Darrenwood Sports Club.

Community members have had a smashing time as they learn to play tennis at Darrenwood Sports Club.

Under the tutelage of veteran ace Neil van Loggerenberg, siblings Izago (8) and Amahubo Francis (7) are among many of the youngsters practising the ins and out of the game every week.

Stances are very important for new tennis players and Van Loggerenberg stresses this during the first drills of the day.

The chairperson and club captain of Darrenwood Sports Club has the players practise their forehands, backhands, volleys, smashes and serves before letting them play a practice match.

The win can go either way, and Van Loggerenberg ensures good sportsmanship is shown and there are no hard feelings afterwards.

“Tennis is a very social game and one can meet many people playing it,” Van Loggerenberg said after the friendly match.

“If you are immigrating and you can play tennis you can join the local club and start your new friendship circle. Tennis is a great stress reliever for me. A tough single or doubles match takes your mind away from stresses and you can just focus on your game.”

Darrenwood Sports Club is a good venue to go to if you play or would like to start playing tennis.

The venue has four courts (two with lights) and newbies can practise at the club’s facilities.

When they feel confident they can participate in the club’s round robins, leagues and club championships.

Van Loggerenberg also organises these events while running his Neils’ Tennis Coaching.
