It was a day of summer hats, good laughs and fun bowls at the Doreen Walker Ladies Day Competition.
The sun shone kindly on Linden Bowling Club on 18 March, as it hosted 72 women from clubs from all over Joburg and made a day of it by raising funds for a local special-needs school and charity.

“Doreen was a long-standing member of Linden Bowling Club and was passionate about teaching pupils from Casa Do Sol School how to play bowls,” explained the club’s events organising committee member, Linda Hampton.
“She ran this competition for many years but sadly went back to the UK last year. Money collected before the event will be donated to the school.”

Pick n Pay Ferndale on Republic sponsored the event, while bowlers also made donations to the Pad Princess initiative, gratefully received by director Liza Verburg.

Linden Bowling Club has been busy recently with the start of the Johannesburg Bowls Association leagues as well preparation for the club’s annual Easter Tournament and Winter Tournament, which attract top bowlers from around the province.
Hampton encouraged the community to join in on the fun and give bowls a try. “It’s never too early to start bowls,” she said.

“Most bowlers comment after a few lessons that they should have started years earlier. We are known as The Green Machine but prefer to call ourselves The Linden Family due to our strong support system and camaraderie on and off the greens.”
