Mob assault leads to murder

DOUGLASDALE – Police open a case of murder after a man dies after suffering severe injuries in Kya Sands.

Police are discouraging residents from taking justice into their own hands when a man died after suffering severe injuries at the hands of members of the community in Kya Sands.

Captain Mpho Tshetlhane of Douglasdale police said the 32-year-old man was a victim of mob justice when he was assaulted on 13 March by residents who accused him of being involved in criminal activities.

“The police and emergency medical services were alerted about the incident and reacted swiftly to the scene,” the captain said.

“The victim succumbed to his injuries and died on the way to hospital. A case of murder has been opened and no one has been arrested yet. Police investigations are continuing.”

Tshetlhane said mob or vigilante action was a violation of the law, and residents ran the risk of targeting innocent people who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Douglasdale police are working with the community and other stakeholders to help reduce crime in the area.

“We appeal to community members with information that might assist the police investigations to phone 011 699 1333/1320 or 071 675 7358 or 0860 010 111 or alternatively use the MySAPSApp to provide tip-offs anonymously.”
