Curro hockey stars top Hawks

SUNDOWNER – Two Curro Aurora hockey players are currently playing at provincial level for the Mzansi Hawks hockey team.

Two Curro Aurora hockey players have made their school proud after being selected to play at provincial level for Mzansi Hawks in the Joburg Hockey League.

Asad Davids in Grade 10 and Vaiyur Moodley in Grade 12 were identified by the school’s head of hockey and manager of Mzansi Hawks franchise Nadia van Biljon as the perfect fit for her team. “Both talented gentlemen were drafted into the U16 and U18 teams, and not only did our boys represent their school and Mzansi Hawks hockey proudly, but they were both identified and named amongst the franchise coaching staff as top performers within their teams,” said Van Biljon.

She added that the tournament presented young hockey players the opportunity to compete at a prestigious level and showcase their talents and abilities under strict Covid-19 safety protocols while learning from some of the highest graded and rated coaches in the country. “Not only does this bode well for the future of hockey within Curro Aurora, but it has provided a platform for these boys to be tested against the best in the province and they have been thrown into the pipeline of high-performance players for universities and local club recruitment.”

The tournament, which was placed on hold due to the Covid-19 lockdown, sees six franchise teams participating in the newly formed league. Fixtures will take place at Wits University, Randburg Hockey Stadium, St Stithians College, Parktown Girls, Beaulieu College and Hoërskool Linden, with the finals being played on 22 March at Randburg Hockey Stadium.
