Off-duty security officer arrested for murder

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said police officers were called to the scene of a vehicle collision at the busy intersection near the Randburg taxi rank.

An off-duty security officer was arrested for an alleged murder that took place on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Bram Fischer Drive on 14 February.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said police officers were called to the scene of a vehicle collision at the busy intersection near the Randburg taxi rank.

“When our officers arrived at the scene, they found a [e-hailing] taxi vehicle with its doors open,” said Maja.
He added that next to the vehicle, officers found a victim lying face down and bleeding with a gunshot to his upper body.
“Medical assistance was required on the scene but unfortunately on their arrival, the man was certified dead. Our officers proceeded to investigate.”

A while later, a man walked into the Randburg Police Station and claimed he was involved in the alleged altercation and wanted to turn himself in.

The 45-year-old suspect who claimed that he was an off-duty security officer was arrested by officers at the police station.
He is expected to appear briefly in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court to face a charge of murder.
Maja added that the motive for the alleged murder was not yet known and was under investigation.
