The community showed its support for the fight against cancer at the Pink Golf Challenge at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate on 30 October.

The lush greens received spots of pink as golfers dressed to the theme and laughed and cheered each other on during a sunny and beautiful day.

The Thato Molamu Foundation hosted its first golf day to raise funds and awareness for the early detection of cancer, and organisers have promised the event will return next year.

“We had a successful turnout and support from golfers across different sectors including doctors, which was a great reflection on our health practitioners who pioneer for transformation for public health care system in our country,” said TV actor, Thato Molamu.

“We were honoured to have Dr Dikeledi Mokone [from Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital] and Prof Salome Maswime from University of Cape Town as our guests of honour by making an appearance for this beautiful initiative.”

Molamu added that his foundation was launched on World Cancer Day, 4 February this year.

“The highlight of the day was really the support of the 128 golfers playing to support cancer awareness for our communities in South Africa that are challenged with access to quality health care benefits. We wanted the golfers to see our commitment to the cause and that through collaborations we can achieve sustainable impact for our rural and township communities.”

The money raised from the golf day, which has not been calculated yet will be given to a local hospital towards building a cancer unit capable of treating patients with chemotherapy and provide for daily check-ins.

The foundation also hopes to launch a mentorship programme for young boys and men. This will complement its sister programme called Girl Without Identity that began in August.

“The boys’ programme is connected to the male testing programme, for mentoring breast and prostate cancer [patients] alongside an entrepreneurial development skills training programme,” Molamu concluded.
