Jozi Trails routes are still a no-go

JOBURG – Jogging and cycling along the trail routes is becoming a dangerous exercise.

Exercisers have been reminded that the Jozi Trails are still closed following a spate in crime over the last few weeks.

Jozi Trails have warned members of the public against using the trails system as they are still officially closed and, more importantly, becoming a safety hazard for those along the routes. In a statement released by Jozi Trails on their Facebook page, they pleaded with the public to be aware of the current situation. It read, “None of the Jozi Trails Bobbies are on duty and the reduced activity in public spaces makes these areas even more dangerous. Please do not put yourself or your loved ones at risk by ignoring these regulations.”

Linden Police Station recently warned the public to avoid open spaces and parks as more robbery cases were being opened. Spokesperson for the station, Constable Takalani Matumba said, “People are not allowed to be in parks, so the criminals are taking advantage of those people walking in the park and robbing them of their valuables.” She confirmed that places such as Delta Park had become a hotspot for such criminal incidents and advised joggers to ensure their leave any valuables at home and the details of your jog with someone you live with.

Jozi Trails said they are in the process of improving security along these routes and will keep the public up to date on the matter. They added, “However, until these [measures] are in place, it is up to every person who chooses to use these areas under lockdown regulations to be responsible for their own safety.”

The following exercising and jogging safety tips were shared:

  • If possible, always walk or jog with a friend or dog.
  • Avoid secluded areas and open fields that are overgrown and stay in sight of other walkers or runners, as far as possible.
  • Keep your cell phone out of sight and refrain from using it while out in public.
  • Leave your valuables at home, do not wear jewellery and expensive items when out and about.
