Ferndale’s mighty mouse plans to break records

FERNDALE – Visually impaired local teen, Nathan Busse, created a Bloodhound LSR using just his Lego and now hopes his creation come to life and break records.

Mighty, brave and eager to prove his naysayers wrong. These are the words that best describe Nathan Busse (17), who designed his own Bloodhound LSR using just his Lego.

Now, the young man hopes to garner 10 000 votes from the community which will make it possible for him to have his creation literally come to life. Should he get these votes, Lego will manufacture Nathan’s creation. A Bloodhound LSR is described as a land vehicle designed to travel at supersonic speeds with the intention of setting a new world land-speed record.

But who is Nathan and why is he mighty? Well, he was born three months premature weighing 1.01kg and at only 12 days old he received his first eye operation. While he spent the next three months in neonatal intensive care unit he was given the moniker, Mighty Mouse, and mighty he was! He still had to undergo four more operations to his eye which he faced like a trooper. Today, Nathan is visually impaired, being blind in his left eye and having minus 14 per cent vision in his right eye. “I sometimes wonder how it must feel to be able to see with two eyes but then I think, no, it’s better seeing with one eye because then I can focus on one thing,” he shared.

With all these challenges as well as being bullied and picked on it was as though he had a mountain stacked against him, yet, he shows his bravery daily by never giving up. A recent eye test proved that he would not be able to drive but, eager to prove his naysayers wrong, he threw himself into doing something he knew he could succeed at. Over a spate of nine days Nathan brought his two great loves together, Lego and the Bloodhound LSR with just his ambition to assist him. Through working with his Lego all through his life, it helped develop his fine motor-skills and stimulate his creativity.

His mother, Annie, who shares similar challenges, is one of her son’s biggest supporters. Like any doting mother she believes in the infinite possibilities her son will one day achieve just through his sheer will and self-determination.
