Softball star scores home run

RANDPARK RIDGE – Saffron Heroldt is Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge Preparatory School's softball star.

Saffron Heroldt bounces into the room with her mother close behind her. Eager to share her love of softball, the Grade 6 learner takes her seat at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge.

“I have played soft ball since I was in Grade 2 in the junior prep,” Saffron recalled as she reflected on the start of how her softball stardom began with Tee-ball, a simplified version of softball and baseball.

Saffron performed exceptionally well at the softball tournament which has landed her in the all-star U13 team for softball. The team was set to tour the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium in September when Saffron spoke to the Randburg Sun. This may have changed due to the global coronavirus pandemic. The league consisted of teams from different provinces where Saffron scored a home run against the team from KwaZulu-Natal.

“We were very proud of her when she played in the tournament – she did really well! She was one of the youngest in the team but she wasn’t scared,” beamed Saffron’s mom Taryn Heroldt.

“I like ball sports,” stated Saffron before she went on to elaborate that she also plays netball and tennis.

The softball star dedicated seven hours to the sport when she was playing with the Johannesburg Softball Association. Four hours were dedicated to practice on Saturdays on top of the three hours designated to playing for the school.

Saffron expressed that ‘age doesn’t matter’ when pursuing your goals, as she is one of the youngest in her team.
