5 suspects arrested following a robbery at a fast food restaurant in Honeydew

HONEYDEW – Brigadier Mathapelo Peters warned that people should expect more operations that will include roadblocks, stop-and-searches, raiding of liquor outlets, patrols at the taxi ranks as well as shopping centres as the holidays approach.

On Saturday, 7 December, the police arrested five suspects following a robbery at a fast-food restaurant in Honeydew, said Brigadier Mathapelo Peters in a released statement on behalf of the South African Police Service. The police also recovered three unlicensed firearms.

Peters said that it is alleged that approximately five suspects entered the restaurant in Honeydew on Saturday night and took an undisclosed amount of cash and cellular phones.

“The suspects were cornered in Roodepoort where a shoot-out ensued when the suspects allegedly started shooting at the police. Two suspects were shot and injured while the other three were arrested with no injuries,” said Peters.

Peters said that three firearms believed to have been used by the suspects were recovered on the scene.

Peters warned that people should expect more operations that will include roadblocks, stop and searches, raiding of liquor outlets, patrols at the taxi ranks as well as shopping centres as the holidays approach.

Police are calling for the community of Gauteng to shout if the crime is committed under their watch and that can be done by either calling crime stop on 08600 10111 or via the new MySAPS App where the public can share anonymous tip-offs or search for the nearest police station.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various Magistrates’ Courts within the province from today, 9 December.
