Swimmers find success at Quest

RANDPARK RIDGE– Local swimmers win big at the Midmar Mile and Sun City Swim this year.

Quest Swim Club can celebrate the success of two of its members at some of South Africa’s biggest swimming events this year.

Shane Cafetzoglou (10) won the age nine-category at the Midmar Mile in February and followed it up with a win at the Sun City Swim in the age 10 division in October.

He completed the 1.6km Midmar Mile in an amazing time of 00:30:13 and the 1.5km Sun City Swim in just 00:29:04. He also took five medals at two prestige galas this year for Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge.

Shane’s mentor at the Randpark Ridge swim club, Aaryn Davis-Hannibal (16) has been offered bursaries to several other schools after he swam senior times and won silver medals at each of this year’s two prestige galas for Rand Park High School.

“I have been swimming for maybe 10 years now, ” Aaryn said. “I enjoy getting in the water. It helps my mind clear a bit from school and other sports.”

Shane has been swimming for four years and said he liked to swim because he was good at it and it was fun. “My favourite stroke is freestyle,” the youngster said.

Their coach at the club, Aaryn’s father Wayne Davis-Hannibal said the pair trained together often and shared a committed attitude toward the sport.

“Shane is a very positive and optimistic person which uplifts the other swimmers,” Davis-Hannibal said.

“His parents’ support also plays a big factor in his development. Aaryn is a hard worker and teaches other children. He put Shane under his wing at lessons.”

The coach added that swimming had not only helped these two but all the youngsters at his club, who have developed their muscles and trained to improve their relaxation techniques in the water.
